Almshouse vacancy

We have a vacancy for a one-bedroomed almshouse in the beautiful Bluecoat Square, behind The Bluecoat building on Upper Northgate Street.

The traditional two-storey almshouse is unfurnished and comprises one bedroom, a bathroom, living room and kitchen with white goods. It features a flower bed to the front of the accommodation and use of a shared courtyard and garden in a community of 16 almshouses.

To be considered eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be aged approximately sixty years or over;
  • Must be capable of independent living and climbing stairs;
  • Have a strong connection with Chester, for example you reside or have resided here or have a family connection;
  • Have limited financial resources and be able to demonstrate this.

The self-contained house is offered at a weekly charge of £104.50 (exclusive of bills and Council Tax) which is eligible for housing benefit, if applicable. Please note this is an almshouse licence agreement, not a tenancy, and is managed in accordance with the charity’s governing document.

You can download the application form here: Almshouse application form 26 March 2026

Any shortlisted applicants will be invited to an open day to view the almshouse prior to the in-person interview.
