We are delighted to be able to support STAR’s (Share, Talk and Remember) launch of much-needed support group STAR LAC (Share, Talk and Remember Loss of an Adult Child).
STAR, a peer support group established by a small community who have experienced bereavement or significant loss, began in 2023. It is a secure and safe space where people can share their experiences, speaking to and learning from those who have gone through something similar.
It became apparent that those who had experienced the death of an adult child suffer significantly from poor mental health and social isolation, even from friends and families, and are largely ignored and underrepresented. Mostly their experiences do not get better over time, instead getting much worse. The objective of STAR LAC is to provide a safe, secure space staffed by trained volunteers to meet others who have also lost an adult child. The group provides support, a sense of belonging, understanding how to navigate the thoughts and feelings of bereavement and signposting for further help if needed.
We were pleased to be able to support the launch of STAR LAC with a grant of £600 to cover the necessary volunteer and administration costs for this marginalized group.
The first meeting held at Storyhouse was attended by 6 mothers who had lost children. Both a moving and harrowing meeting, one woman said “You have no idea what coming here means to me”.
