Helping the launch of accessible workshops

We were pleased to be able to support the launch of the Creative Social Club at Storyhouse with a grant of £4,381.

This is a weekly drop-in group for young people age 14-25 where they can take part in creative and accessible workshops at Storyhouse, with a focus on health and wellbeing.  The club is for young people with low self-esteem, mental health concerns, are NEET, young people in care, young carers or have special educational needs who face significant barriers to participation.

The sessions are ranged to suit all needs and interests, from creative writing to drama to dance. The emphasis in on developing social connections and skills and building mental health and confidence, whilst having fun.

The attendees are recruited through referral partners including Young People’s Services, organisations such as Platform for Life and Special Educational Needs coordinators at local secondary schools.

The club was launched in January and so far each session has had on average 11 people. In a creative writing session, one of the prompts was “describe a place you feel warm and safe” to which one young person described Storyhouse itself because of this group.

The club is also funded by the Cheshire West & Chester Youth Opportunities Fund.

Storyhouse is a charity that incorporates a library, theatre and a community and creative social space, running various groups serving our community such as Chatter and Natter, Chester Walk Club and a support group for those who have experienced domestic violence.
